Connect Assist, the charity helpline provider, has launched a new service for Caravan the National Grocers’ Benevolent Fund.

The new helpline focuses on personal welfare problems arising from work as well as from home and is open to all those who work in the grocery industry.

Individuals are offered the option of talking through their problems with a specialist advisor either by phone or email. For people who prefer not to ask for help directly, there is a web-based range of self-help tools and advice.

Dame Carol Black, the UK’s Director for Work and Health, paid a visit to LTL Connect this month as part of the Healthy Minds at Work Initiative. Dame Black is the author of ‘Working for a Healthier Tomorrow’ published last month, which was a thorough review of the health of Britain’s working age population. The review takes the position that working promotes health, calling for a reduction in long-term unemployment and people claiming long-term sickness benefits, encouraging employers to improve their employees’ wellbeing in work through providing sensitive and appropriate support to staff-members, especially when they are dealing with issues relating to physical or mental health. ‘Work is, on the whole, good for an individual’s health and wellbeing, and the reverse is true of worklessness,’ states the report.

Six members of LTL Connect’s contact centre have been awarded certificates in telephone coaching this month issued by the University of Strathclyde. Life coaching is a method of supporting individuals through providing a way of giving non-judgemental support to people, listening to their feelings, goals and any worries they have, with an aim to provide techniques and simple strategies to help them transform their lives.
